Candidate Visits and Public Forums

The recruitment advisory committee has recommended four outstanding finalist candidates for the Dean – College of Letters and Science. We have confirmed four campus visit dates:

  • Candidate A:  Monday and Tuesday, May 16 and 17
  • Candidate B:  Thursday and Friday, May 19 and 20
  • Candidate C:  Monday and Tuesday, May 23 and 24
  • Candidate D: Thursday and Friday, May 26 and 27

As part of the interview process, you are invited to a public forum where the candidates will discuss the topic: "Identify and discuss three significant trends or developments occurring in liberal arts education that will have potential importance to the College of Letters and Science in the upcoming decade.” The public forums will be followed by a moderated Q&A session. Audio recordings from the public forums will be posted until close of business on June 2, 2016.

The candidate of choice will possess the vision and transformational leadership capacity to shepherd the College during a time of change.

The successful candidate will also have a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and service appropriate for appointment as a tenured professor at UC Davis. In addition, the Dean will have demonstrated ability for leadership and management; the ability to work with faculty to develop a vision and strategy within an environment of shared governance; experience in building partnerships internally and externally; demonstrated financial and administrative skills; ability to recruit and retain talented and diverse faculty; a deep commitment to diversity and inclusion; a record of success in obtaining extramural funding and philanthropic support; and a collaborative spirit. He/she will possess the political acumen and diplomatic skills to forge productive partnerships. Finally, the successful candidate will share the University’s Principles of Community, which are characterized by respect, integrity, openness and responsiveness and by consultation and collaboration.

The college is the largest in the university, educating almost all undergraduate students at some point in their careers at UC Davis. It is made up of three divisions encompassing the broadest offering of disciplines at UC Davis: Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences. The college’s 650+ faculty members are part of the college’s more than 50 departments and programs, many of which are ranked amongst the top in the world.

The recruitment advisory committee, chaired by Julie Freischlag, vice chancellor of Human Health Science and dean of the School of Medicine and co-chaired by Louise Kellogg, professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences, is composed primarily of faculty, staff and students to ensure that the views of the Letters & Science community are represented and considered during the recruitment process.
