UC Davis has launched a nationwide recruitment for the position of Dean – School of Education. We are seeking a dynamic and accomplished individual to serve as the new Dean. The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the School of Education, with responsibility for the overall management and operation of the School, including management of its resources: faculty and staff, physical facilities and budget. The dean serves as the lead in representing the School to the campus and its leadership and to the outside world, including alumni and donors.

The School of Education (SOE) was established in 2002 and supports a number of programs that link research, instruction, and service to K-12 schools. SOE offers preparation for the California teaching credential, master's and doctoral-level programs for both educational researchers and practitioners, and professional development for educators throughout Northern California. The School's REEd Center promotes collaborative, university-school research projects that address issues of schooling practice and policy, provides teacher-driven professional development, and fosters linkages between the campus, elementary and secondary schools, and community partners in the region. The School is also home to the Center for Applied Policy in Education (CAP-Ed) and EdForward, a business center created to develop innovations in education with a goal of identifying and implementing entrepreneurial revenue generating products and services in support of the vision and mission of the School.

The successful candidate will have a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and service appropriate for appointment as a tenured professor at UC Davis. In addition, the Dean will have demonstrated ability for leadership and management; the ability to work with faculty to develop a vision and strategy within an environment of shared governance; experience in building partnerships internally and externally; demonstrated financial and administrative skills; ability to recruit and retain talented and diverse faculty; a deep commitment to diversity and inclusion; a record of success in obtaining extramural funding and philanthropic support; and a collaborative spirit. He/she will possess the political acumen and diplomatic skills to forge productive partnerships. Finally, the successful candidate will share the University’s Principles of Community, which are characterized by respect, integrity, openness and responsiveness and by consultation and collaboration.

The recruitment advisory committee, chaired by Kevin Johnson, Dean of the School of Law, and co-chaired by Cindy Passmore, Professor, School of Education, is composed primarily of faculty, staff and students.
