Interfaith and Harmony Shabbat

Good evening, everyone, and Shabbat Shalom.

I want to thank Hillel at Davis and Sacramento and the Interfaith Campus Council for inviting me to speak at this annual Interfaith and Harmony Shabbat. It’s truly an honor to be here with all of you tonight.

Gatherings like this are a testament to the power of community, shared values, and mutual respect, which are essential during these challenging times.

Your cooperation and camaraderie are truly admirable. Although you come from many backgrounds and belief systems, you share a common goal: To promote mutual respect and understanding among our campus community.

You all embody the diversity that makes UC Davis such a wonderful place. You are committed to finding common ground with others who may be different from you.

As we continue to work in harmony, I want to acknowledge how difficult the past few years have been, both globally and locally.

From the events of October 7th, to rising antisemitism and acts of hatred affecting various communities, we have faced significant challenges. Tonight’s Shabbat reminds us of how important it is to stand together in solidarity and uphold our values of inclusion and respect.

No matter what faith each of us follows, it’s pivotal for keeping us centered and staying positive no matter what comes at us in life. Some of the best advice I ever received was: “Work hard, play hard and pray hard.”

I’d like to mention the pride I feel when I see our campus joining together, especially in times of deep divisions. Tonight's Shabbat, which brings together people of different faiths, backgrounds, and experiences, makes me hopeful for the future and proud to be part of this vibrant community.

I’m also inspired by the Interfaith Campus Council’s leadership in fostering dialogue, understanding, and support among students and the broader Davis community. Your dedication to creating spaces for connection and belonging is invaluable.

At UC Davis, we remain committed to ensuring that everyone feels safe, valued, and respected. This commitment extends to addressing antisemitism, racism, and all forms of hatred and discrimination. Our strength lies in our diversity and our ability to work together for a better future.

Solidarity, as exemplified here tonight, is not just a principle but an action. It’s a call to support one another, amplify each other's voices and build bridges of understanding.

In moments like this, I see the best of what our community can be — a beacon of hope, resilience, and unity. Your presence here tonight demonstrates that through dialogue and partnership, we can create a brighter, more inclusive future for everyone.

Thank you again to Hillel and the Interfaith Campus Council for hosting this important event and for your unwavering commitment to building community and fostering understanding. And, I’m grateful to everyone here for contributing to this spirit of solidarity.

May we continue to work together, supporting and uplifting one another as we move forward.

As we celebrate Shabbat tonight, let us carry its message of peace, reflection, and renewal with us in the days ahead. Shabbat Shalom, and thank you.

L’Chaim!
